I'm writing about my father again, and how he used to play shadow-puppet theater. I watched hours of documentary on this folk practice, and learned the name of the screen as a result.

The intertidal zone of the seashore, The area of a shore that lies between the average high tide mark and the average low tide mark.  Also, littoral zone. Organisms in the intertidal zone are adapted to an environment of harsh extremes. Water is available regularly with the tides but varies from fresh with rain to highly saline and dry salt with drying between tidal inundations. The action of waves can dislodge residents in the littoral zone. With the intertidal zone's high exposure to the sun the temperature range can be anything from very hot with full sun to near freezing in colder climates. Some microclimates in the littoral zone are ameliorated by local features and larger plants such as mangroves. Adaptation in the littoral zone allows the use of nutrients supplied in high volume on a regular basis from the sea which is actively moved to the zone by tides. Edges of habitats, in this case land and sea, are themselves often significant ecologies, and the littoral zone is a prime example.

A typical rocky shore can be divided into a spray zone or splash zone (also known as the supratidal zone), which is above the spring high-tide line and is covered by water only during storms, and an intertidal zone, which lies between the high and low tidal extremes.

Πέρκα ~ painted comber

The painted comber (Serranus scriba) is a subtropical marine fish, classified in family Serranidae, the groupers and sea basses. It is found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Sea. Synonyms are Perca marina and Sebastus marinus.

μανάλι ~ greater amberjack

The Greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is a jack of the genus Seriola. It is found in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian coasts, living usually between 20 and 70 m of depth (with a maximum of 360 m). It is the largest genus in the Carangidaefamily, with a maximum length of 200 cm.

It is a fast swimming pelagic fish with similar habits to the kingfish. They are silver-blue with a golden side line, with a brown band crossing over the eye area.

ιδιοποιούμαι ~ misappropriate

From the definition of rodent below, the meaning of this word was obvious, but I thought I'd get a clear definition--it means to annex, misappropriate, usurp. "The treasurer is accused of having misappropriated the company's money."

τρωκτικό ~ rodent

In  its metaphorical sense, "person who slowly and systematically, yet also deviously, wastes other people's money" (definition below) is, for obvious reasons, all over the news. At some point in the past, I knew the word meant rodent, but then I forgot.

I heard the word on a radio show about Σοφία Βέμπο, who was in a theatrical production where she played a whore. This word is also in a Mitropanos song... but I never looked it up.

Its etymology is the French word trotteuse, which means "second hand."

We all know the 4 kinds of love: έρωτας (erotic), αγάπη (all-encompassing), φιλία (friendly), στοργή (parental, nurturing). But I didn't know there was a verb to express feel στοργή!

I learned it from the song I've been hearing since elementary school:

Γαϊδουροκαλόκαιρο ~ Indian Summer

Γαϊδουροκαλόκαιρο ~ guy-doo-ro-ka-LO-keh-ro, meaning "donkey summer" is what we call in American English "Indian summer."

Νηνεμία ~ ninemia ~ absence of wind

Used metaphorically just like "eye of the storm" to mean lull, temporary calm. After being in Serifos during the meltemia, I understand why the Greeks have a special word for the absence of wind.
