Poke Greens

I learned what poke greens are from Mark Doty's Heaven's Coast. some of My grad students knew what they were.... almost ... they made up an etymology, something about poking out of the earth, and the term being a catch all for all greens, which it evidently is not. 

τσίφτης

Loukia came to my office and asked, tsiftis, do you know what it is? Of course I do! I started singing lines of songs that include the word tsiftissa, and then confessed that I don't know what it means. 

Here's the definition.  It means, mangas, etymologically a HAWK in Albanian, and can refer to an impeccable mind, manner, and/or appearance.

Ο όρος χρησιμοποιείται για ονόματα ζώων που εμφανίζουν τον ίδιο λεξικό τύπο και για τα δύο φύλα (π.χ. ζαρκάδι, καμήλα). Στη σύγχρονη γλωσσολογική ορολογία πάντως, χρησιμοποιείται ο όρος ασημάδευτος τύπος, με την έννοια ότι η λέξη δεν κάνει τη διάκριση (το σημάδι) του φύλου. Το αντίθετό του είναι ο σημαδεμένος τύπος, π.χ. φοράδα, σκύλα κλπ.

χαιβάνι

Ι first heard this word in the song Ἡ μπαλάντα τοῦ κυρ-μέντιου  but more recently in a facebook post from Γιώργος Τοπαλίδης. According to his post, The Turkish word hayvanlar has a Greek equivalent χαϊβάνια. The literal translation is animals, but the essence is dumbasses.
