A catalogue of new words I learn in Greek and English. This is the public blog of Joanna Eleftheriou (Ιωάννα Ελευθερίου). I welcome comments that help refine my understanding of these words' nuances and usage. Thanks!

Structuralism
For some reason, I found myself reading about the death of the author in Greek, and discovered that structuralism can be both στρουκτουραλισμός, structuralism phonetically put in Greek characters, and also δομισμός (thomisMOSS), which uses the Greek word for structure, δομή, (thoMEE) and the ism suffix, too.
Interestingly, for poststructuralism they don't seem to bother with the Latin word, but just call it μεταδομισμος (metathomisMOSS).

Draft
I looked up "draft" as in of a piece of writing in gogole translate and it gave me προσχέδιο, but I've never heard it said in that context, so I can't be sure. Next time I have a greek person in front of me I'll ask.
Βubonic plague
πανώλη, in this song, is in the context clearly Bubonic plague. Google translate, however, offers for the word also "swine," and "African horse." I don't have time to investigate why this could possible be, but I"d like to know.

cohesively
I knew the noun for cohesion before, συνοχή, but just learned the adverb, cohesively, συνεκτικά. same interview of Stai and Papakaliatis.
επίκτητος
acquired, adoptive, learned... heard in Elli Stai's interview of Papakaliati... they were talking about emotions, some being acquired... don't remember exact context, but it's a good word.

Σερέτης
Βελοw is the entry from slang.gr, which explains that a seretis is like a mangas and a daEESS, all of which existed in the time of the Rembetes, and no longer.
It is from this song that i heard the word:
- Τι έπαθες ρε μαλάκα; Πολύ σερέτης μας το παίζεις σήμερα.
- (ψιθυριστά) Σουτ, σκάσε ρε μαλάκα μπας και βγάλω κανα γκομενάκι.
Caveat
Ρήτρα (REE-trah): caveat, condition (for a contract), etc. apparently the word's been around unchanged since ancient times.

Μοre nautical confusions
θαλαμηγό = yacht = κότερο
κότερο (KOH-terr-oh) is listed as cutter, sloop, AND yacht. I don't know enought about these words in English to know how much it matters that one Greek word is supposed to catch them all.

μούτσος - λοστρόμος
cabin boy (moutsos) - boatswain... Sometimes I'm not sure it's worth learnign boat terms because I don't know what they meanin English either!
Months later I heard moutsos in this song and was pretty sure it meant cabin boy, but wasn't sure...
Sevah o thalassinos

trundle
Καρούλι is apparently a reel or trundle--anything that's a narrow cylinder in the middle and has broad circular edges so that thread or wire can be wrapped around it. I am not sure I knew the English word before except in the context of trundle bed, which seems to have nothing to do with the idea of a reel.
